Children spend 12 years of their youth in school developing minds, bodies and attitudes in preparation for life. They spend six to seven hours daily in school influenced greatly by the experiences that shape lives and ultimately their future.

The district's food and nutrition department takes seriously its obligation to fortify children with nutritious foods as well as nutrition literacy so youngsters have every opportunity to develop to the fullest extent of their capabilities.

During this school year the CUSD food and nutrition department is:

  • Serving an average of 30,000 meals per day including breakfast and lunch at 39 sites.
  • Providing breakfast, lunch and snacks to five Headstart locations in the East Valley.
  • Providing catering services for special functions throughout the district.
  • Providing nutrition education through school newsletters, classroom presentations, nutrition advice on Channel 99 and staff development programs.
  • Available with three registered dietitians to answer nutrition-related questions.
  • Continuing to analyze menus in order to meet dietary guidelines.
