Overview of General Music at Hancock Students at Hancock Elementary in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade experience General Music classes every three days and classes last 30 minutes. These classes are taught by certified music teachers and material is directly from the Chandler USD Curriculum Blueprints, AZ General Music Standards, and the National Performing Arts Standards. Students in 3rd Grade continue with the same concepts, but singing becomes more challenging and more advanced vocal techniques are explored. Students will also find that the musical selections become more challenging and cover a broad range of cultural and historical backgrounds. 3rd Grade classes are also the core grade for our popular Artist in Residence Program. Students in 4th Grade continue the same concepts, but the focus shifts to instrument playing. The recorder is introduced and students learn to read notes, rhythms, and play with expression. Students usually perform in a concert in February or March. 4th Grade students also explore instruments of the orchestra and will learn advanced concepts of music including texture, expression, timbre and form. 4th Grade students usually travel to a symphony concert sometime in April or May. 5th Grade and 6th Grade students at Hancock have a choice between band, orchestra or general music. They attend their music class choice for two out of every three days for 30 minutes. Band and orchestra classes are taught by a traveling band director and orchestra instructor, both certified instrumental music instructors. Band and orchestra usually perform two concerts per year. General Music students will explore music from around the world, learn about advanced categories of instruments, and continue to learn about, compose and perform advanced rhythms and styles. General Music students in 5th and 6th grade will complete a number of projects ranging from musical compositions, to performances in class, to research projects on a broad range of styles of music from a variety of cultures and historical time periods.
